Read Before You React
Family guide · Why Study Scripture This Way? · 2 Timothy 2:14-15; 2 Timothy 3:14-17; Acts 17:10-12 · about 15 minutes
Big idea: Faithful study requires disciplined reading rather than inherited slogans or isolated proof texts.
This study gives the family a simple method for separating the verse, its meaning, and its application.
The 15-minute flow
- 2 minConnect. Use the opening prompt to connect the lesson to ordinary family life.
- 5 minRead. Read 2 Timothy 2:14-18 and 3:14-17 rather than reading verse 15 alone.
- 3 minUnderstand. Ask what problem Paul addresses and what a faithful worker should do.
- 3 minPlay. Choose one familiar verse and read the paragraph around it. Name one detail that context adds.
- 2 minRespond. Choose the weekly action, then pray together.
Talk about it
- What is the difference between a verse and our interpretation of it?
- How can we disagree without becoming quarrelsome?
This week
Action: During one family Bible reading, require everyone to state an observation before giving an application.
Prayer: God, make us diligent, honest, humble readers who seek truth and do not harm others with careless words.
Note for parents: Do not require anyone to disclose private doubts. A general reading example is sufficient.
