Objective: Students distinguish translation from textual criticism and practise calibrated confidence using Bible footnotes.

Read: Nehemiah 8:1-8; selected footnotes at Mark 16 and John 7-8

Opening: Display two English translations of one ordinary sentence. Ask what can change while the same event is represented.

Say:

Nehemiah 8 joins reading, explanation, and understanding.
Translation asks how to represent words and meaning in another language.
Textual criticism asks which reading is best supported when manuscripts differ.
Honest footnotes are not a reason for panic, and confident claims still need evidence.

Ask:

8 minRead and observe. Read Nehemiah 8:1-8, then inspect one textual footnote exactly as printed in the available translation. Ask: What does Nehemiah 8 say happens between reading and understanding? How is a translation choice different from a textual variant?
7 minDiscuss. Use the lab to separate observation, manuscript question, translation decision, confidence, and theological consequence. Ask: What does the selected footnote actually say-and not say? What does calibrated confidence sound like?
